Fighting U.S voter suppression: What you can do to get involved
Learn about the current conditions of U.S voter suppression and what you can do to facilitate advancement.
The current climate
The present conditions of voter suppression across the country involve obstacles to registration, reduction in early voting, and strict voting identity requirements. Recently, the focus has been placed on the Texas Legislature for the Republican effort to change voting laws and uphold voter suppression, claiming that it is an effort to combat voter suppression. This move has prompted democratic lawmakers to flee the state in an effort to delay the passing of the bill.
The case in Texas is not isolated, as the GOP push for restrictive voting laws has been seen in 17 other states around the country, where laws have been passed that limit access to voting.
What is being done
There have been various calls by democratic legislatures for Congress to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which seek to expand and protect voting rights.
- For the People Act: Proposed bill that would expand voting rights, change campaign finance laws, limit partisan gerrymandering, and create rules for federal office holders.
- John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act: Proposed bill that would restore and strengthen parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibits racial discrimination in voting practices.
How to get involved
